TITLE: From Zero to Signs. Transferring Food Safety from Finnish to Finnish Sign Language.

In this workshop we discuss how specific professional concepts and established terminology of a particular field (food hygiene) were translated by an experienced professional deaf translator and interpreter from a majority language into a minority language (Finnish Sign Language) where the concepts regarding food safety are mostly unlexicalized.  

 

We also discuss under which circumstances we may claim that there are lexical standards and existing, established lexicon to be followed e.g. in this kind of publicized translation - or in a terminological online vocabulary - by native sign language interpreters and translators, representing a minority language of a small deaf community.
